Job Summary

The Model Maker sets up, programs and operates machines, such as: CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, drill presses, and band saws, to fabricate prototype parts, assemblies and models. Receives direction from R&D Engineers to create, design and construct tools and parts from a variety of materials such as metal, plastic and composites. As more experience is gained and proficiency demonstrated, the Model Maker has the opportunity to work on more complex tasks.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Create models from CAD part files and drawings.
  • Create, design and construct component models or parts in a variety of materials such as metals, plastics and composites.
  • Cut, shape and form metal parts using CNC mills, CNC lathes, power saws, brakes, shears and assorted hand tools.
  • Machine, grind, file, and sand parts to finished dimensions.
  • Study part files, drawings, and sketches to determine material dimensions for laying out materials and planning part fabrication
  • Rework or alter model components or parts as required to ensure performance of equipment or that parts meet specifications.
  • Use precision measuring tools for inspecting fabricated parts to ensure specifications are met.
  • Fabricate prototype devices, test fixtures, and tooling from verbal and/or written specifications.
  • Receive direction from engineering personnel and offer Design for Manufacturing (DFM) suggestions.
  • Properly conduct safety inspections of the machines and equipment to ensure proper working conditions. Document the inspections and keep records.
  • Operate machine and tools to create and cut parts according to established specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records/documentation related to quality, work in process, test results, measurements, labor and special projects.
  • Perform maintenance of model making machinery and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Understand, follow and support Mizuho OSI’s internal Quality System policies, procedures and work instructions including but not limited to applicable external regulations (21 Code of Federal Regulations Part 820 Quality System Regulations and applicable International Standards).

 

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Requires 2 to 4 years of directly related experience including knowledge and understanding of technical drawings. 
  • HS diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to program tool paths using CAM software such as MasterCAM from CAD files or drawings (Solid Edge and SolidWorks)
  • Skill in interpreting CAD files, sketches, engineering drawings, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished parts, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Ability to work with inspection tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to produce motion, power, technology and other applications.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance. Experience with precision measuring and inspection instruments.
  • Able to prioritize projects within the machine shop to ensure fast fabrication of components.
  • Skill in coordination of hand-eye movements and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to read and follow machine shop procedures and standard concepts or practices.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to use some degree of creativity.
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics, machinability of materials and layout techniques.

 

Payscale: $28.84/hr - $36.54/hr DOE + potential annual bonus + comprehensive benefits package
